Houston County Commission Reinforces Right-of-Way Encroachment Policy to Ensure Federal Funding and Community Safety

The Houston County Commission is issuing a reminder to all residents regarding the enforcement of the right of way encroachment policy. This
reminder is necessary due to a noticeable increase in non-compliant structures like brick mailboxes being installed within county rights of
way, as recently observed by county engineers.

Under this policy, no encroachments, including brick mailboxes, fences, or other non-breakaway structures, are allowed on county right of way.
Such structures pose safety risks and interfere with the maintenance and integrity of our road infrastructure. Adherence to this policy is crucial
for Houston County to qualify for federal funding for road systems. Noncompliance risks shifting the financial burden entirely onto local
taxpayers.

Policy Details:

• Only breakaway mailboxes mounted on posts no larger than 4”x4” if made of wood, or on a 2” diameter hollow, thin-walled metal post, are permitted within the county right of way. All installations must comply with United States Postal Service regulations.
• Residents will be notified by letter if an encroachment is detected, and non-compliant structures will be subject to removal by county workers 30 days from the notification date.

The Houston County Commission urges all property owners to review these regulations and adjust any non-compliant installations promptly. Compliance not only ensures adherence to federal safety standards but also safeguards the community's eligibility for federal funding.
