Equipment Operators Career Path

Non-CDL Operators

Operates light and heavy-duty trucks and tractors. Operates truck equipped with dump body to transport and dump loose materials, such as sand, gravel, crushed rock, or paving materials to designated site.  Performs safety inspection prior to operating equipment and monitors gauges and other equipment while in operation.  Performs routine maintenance.  May operate specialized equipment, such as bulldozers, asphalt roller, motor patrol, etc., occasionally.  May assist in clearing trees, brush, and debris using a variety of tools and equipment.  Employees in this job classification will not operate any equipment on a public road that requires a CDL license.

Minimum Qualifications

Ability to read and write in English, experience in operating trucks or

other heavy equipment, preferred. Valid Driver’s License

Starting Salary

(Grade 15) $15.48-$23.40

 

Equipment Operator I

Operates light and heavy-duty trucks and tractors. Minimum Qualifications

Ability to read and write in English, experience in operating trucks, dump trucks, or other heavy equipment, preferred. Other:  Valid Class “B” Certified Drivers License (CDL) with medical certification. All current employees must have a valid CDL with medical certification.

Starting Salary

(Grade 15) $15.48-$23.40

 

Equipment Operator II

Operates heavy equipment such as backhoe, front-end loader, tandem dump truck, etc. in the performance of assigned routine to moderately complex construction and maintenance activities.  May direct the work of several laborers in accomplishing specific tasks while operating equipment.  Performs safety inspection prior to operating equipment and monitors gauges and other equipment while in operation.  Performs routine maintenance.  May operate complex heavy equipment in performing routine tasks in order to learn the operation of the equipment.  May assist in clearing trees, brush, and debris using a variety of tools and equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

Ability to read and write in English, plus one year of experience in operating trucks and other heavy equipment. Other:  Valid Class “A” Certified Driver’s License with medical certification. All current employees must have valid CDL with medical certification.

Starting Salary

(Grade 17) $17.87-$27.03

 

 

Equipment Operator III

Operates a wide variety of heavy equipment such as motor grader, bulldozer, front-end loader, crane, scraper, roller, etc. in the performance of assigned complex construction and maintenance activities.  May direct the work of several laborers and other equipment operators in accomplishing specific tasks while operating equipment.  Performs safety inspection prior to operating equipment and monitors gauges and other equipment while in operation.  Performs routine maintenance and may assist with repairs.  May assist in clearing trees, brush, and debris using a variety of tools and equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

Ability to read and write in English, plus two years of experience in operating heavy equipment. Other:  Valid Drivers license. Class A CDL preferred.

Starting Salary

(Grade 18) $19.21-$29.06
