Essential Job Functions

1.  Assists in the construction and maintenance of roads and bridges, grading and maintaining rights of way, and participates in other projects of the department as assigned.

1. Clears rights of way, cleans out drainage pipes, packs dirt, piles brush and trash, works  concrete, cinders, granite, rocks and other materials using a variety of gas powered or hand tools.
2. Digs, spreads and levels dirt and gravel using pick and shovel.
3. Lifts and carries materials, tools, and supplies to the work site and assists with their use as instructed.
4. Loads and unloads trucks of dirt, supplies and construction materials.
5. Mixes, pours, and spreads concrete, asphalt, gravel, and other materials using hand tools
6. Grade ditches with hand tools for laying pipe.
7. Joins, wraps and seals sections of pipe.
8. Removes forms from set concrete, fills expansions joints with asphalt, places culvert sections in       trenches and assembles sections of pipe.
9. Cleans tools, equipment, and the work area, and checks fluid levels on motorized tools.
10. May assist in the construction, installation, repair and removal of road signs.
11. May assist the herbicide technician with mixing chemicals and spraying operation.
12. If qualified, may operate equipment such as a dump truck or tractor as needed in order to gain experience.
13. Directs traffic at job sites.

1. Assists in cleaning the inside and outside of vehicle       
2. May occasionally drive truck.
3. Assists in fueling, checking fluid levels, tires, lights, etc.
4. May perform a variety of tasks as assigned, such as animal control, grass cutting, cleaning and painting.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

1. Knowledge of safety rules and practices.
2. Ability to read and write in English.
3. Ability to learn departmental rules, and procedures for collecting and loading trash.
4. Ability to communicate verbally with supervisors and co-workers.
5. Ability to use hand and motorized tools.
6. Ability to perform strenuous manual labor such as loading and unloading trucks, mixing, and spreading concrete and asphalt, etc.
7. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Minimum Qualifications

                Ability to perform strenuous tasks involved in road and bridge construction and maintenance in an outside environment.  Construction experience preferred.  Ability to perform manual labor as required.
