Extensive Tornado Cleanup

Posted January 22, 2024

In the wake of the January 9th tornado's devastation, Houston County has taken swift action to spearhead cleanup initiatives in Cottonwood and the surrounding areas. The County Road & Bridge team has begun clearing debris, with operations projected to last 10 to 12 weeks.

This extensive cleanup is estimated to cost $110,000 weekly. Despite the lack of state or federal aid - a result of the storm's localized impact - Houston County stands resolute in its commitment to recovery, bearing the financial burden of an estimated $1.1 to $1.3 million.

While we focus our efforts on the affected zones, we anticipate short-term postponements in regular road maintenance countywide. Your understanding is deeply appreciated as our dedicated personnel work tirelessly to rehabilitate the affected communities.

We thank the citizens of Houston County for their patience and community spirit as we navigate through these challenging times together.
